Course Description

This course delves into the concept of moral injury and its profound impact on mental health professionals, particularly those engaged in social justice advocacy. Moral injury is defined as the psychological, emotional, existential, and spiritual distress that arises when actions or inactions violate deeply held moral or ethical beliefs, wounding the core of one’s moral framework. Unlike burnout, which can often be mitigated with rest or a change in environment, moral injury requires intentional healing due to its deeper, trauma-like nature. Drawing from research like Beadle et al. (2024), the course examines the systemic, organizational, cultural, and emotional challenges that contribute to moral injury, such as conflicts with systemic constraints, workplace hierarchies, and the emotional toll of client suffering. Students are guided through a 5-step reflective process to begin healing this injury, addressing the pressing wounds, reconciling personal values, understanding the intersection of moral injury with their own cultural identity, and connecting with resources for support, fostering both understanding and actionable healing.
