When a Client's Report of Suicidal Ideation is Holding You Hostage: Do DAMAGE CONTROL!
(4 CE Hours)
Course Description
Managing clients with suicidal ideation can often leave clinicians feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and uncertain, as if they are being "held hostage" by the responsibility of preventing a crisis. This course equips mental health professionals with the tools to confidently assess, intervene, and manage suicide risk using the DAMAGE CONTROL mnemonic device and other evidence-based frameworks. Participants will learn to understand key suicide risk factors, create a structured, step-by-step approach to assessing and responding to suicidality, and develop collaborative, client-centered safety plans.
By integrating the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS) framework, clinicians will also explore how to reduce their own stress and emotional burden while supporting their clients. This course offers practical resources, research-based interventions, and detailed references to ensure that professionals are fully equipped to handle suicide risk without feeling paralyzed by fear or uncertainty. Clinicians will leave with the confidence to manage these difficult cases effectively while maintaining their own well-being.
